Q39 - INFO: Searching for customers and parts; begins search vs. contains search
In both customer searches and parts searches, Service2000 supports two different types of searches. They are:

Begins search: A begin search searches by the beginning of the field text. The more characters you type, the closer you get. You MUST type in the EXACT order of the characters contained in the field being searched.

Contains search: A contains search searches for a word or words that are separated by spaces contained within the field being searched. You MUST type entire words.

When searching for customers or parts in Service2000, you may specify whether you want to do a begins search or a contains search with obviously placed controls (not explained here).

When searching for parts, the contains search searches both the short and the long description fields. However, if you do a contains search for two words, one of which is contained in the short description and the other of which is contained in the long description, your search will fail... unless you use a "search operator", which gives total flexibility in your searches.

Search Operators
================
When doing "contains searches" for customers and parts, Service2000 supports the use of the following search operators:

Character Function Performed By This Character
--------- --------
& (ampersand) and
^ (carat) or
* (asterisk) wildcard

Remember to specify a contains search before using any of these.

Examples of how they might be used:
& (Ampersand): Use this character between two words to search for both of them. In customer searching, for example, if you had a customer with a company name of "City of Alliance", you could find it by typing "city&alliance". Also works on parts contains searches.

^ (carat): Use this character to search for two or more words when you want to search for either of them, especially when one is in the short description and the other is in the long description. Also works when doing customer contains searches.

* (asterisk): Use this character when you want to only type a partial word search (especially when the word you are searching for does not appear at the beginning of the short description). For example, you could find all parts containing the word Purolator by doing a contains search for "purol".
